Jitty Joe's - Local Hotspot for Ice Cream Lovers

From being a long-term, traditional date-nite destination to notoriously helping the local little league celebrate their seasonal big wins, this ice cream shop caterers to all their costumer's sweet treat cravings. "They are a staple in creating unforgettable memories among local residents," Avery Winehouse, a long-time employee of Jitty Joe's remarks proudly. Standing arms crossed, leaning on one of the snowy, boarded windows outside the shop (figure 1), she reminisces of old, fond memories she shared here before she eventually joined their team a "quick 4 years ago."

Offering home-made hard flavors all year round, a variety of rotating soft serve flavors every week, and so much more – Jitty Joe’s knows how to do dessert.

Bill Taygon, otherwise recognized as Short Bill, a nickname equally relevant to his height and short-temper, is the long-serving business owner of Jitty's. Pioneering the path to the shops success through countless trial and error recipe disasters, he eventually found a "soft-spot" for "perfect time-less recipes."

"Bill is extremely easy to piss off at times, especially when the shop is loaded with costumers, but we have yet to receive a complaint that a product didn't meet a costumer's standards." "Bill always asks where is noble peace prize is for ice cream making... he isn't the brightest, but he does deserve an award for these yummy creations," she giggled. Taking the time to maticiously form the menu for Jitty Joe's, the team behind each flavor and dessert did away with endless creations. "Toppings of all sorts - from basic rainbow sprinkles to sauces, such as marshmallow; we want to give our costumers the opportunity to create the ice cream of their dreams."

"We have a big sign advertising all our flavors and different dessert options; my favorite is the edible cookie dough. We actually have pumpkin cookie dough available for the Fall season, along with pumpkin flavored ice cream and flurries, of course." Jitty Joe's carries limited-time, seasonal flavors, which separates the business from the local competiton. Whether it be for a season or even a holiday, they're always spicing up their menus with fun, exciting, out-of-the ordinary flavors. “Red velvet, for example - one of our limited edition flavors in February for Valentines Day. Sugar Cookie ice cream, peppermint - we have those for Christmas.”

Although I wasn’t able to get a behind the scenes, if you will, of the ice cream making process, Avery did let me in on the secret as to how they hand-pick every unique flavor. "You would be surprised as to how long it takes to decide on a flavor." Avery rolled her eyes in annoyance, "Bill takes FOREVER deciding on what to and to not add to the menu. He wants to make sure each flavor caters to everyone - that no one feels like they're favorite ice cream isn't good enough to be offered at Jitty Joe's. He'll sometimes put up polls outside the shop, which allows our costumers to pick our next, new, fun flavor. We call it the double I: interactive and interesting."

After indulging in her sweet, soft-serve deliciousness, a raving consumer, advocating her love for Jitty's commented, “after my grandchild’s first dance recital, we wanted an ice cream shop to eat at, just to, you know, reward her, and we came here, and oh - we haven’t stopped coming. Whether it's with [our grandchild] or not, me and my husband, Rich, love to come here." "The service is always pleasant, too. - and I adore their uniforms. You girls dress so cute," she waved off, chuckling.

"I feel like I'm going to cheer practice every time I throw on my uniform," Avery laughed, "high ponytail, red soffe shorts, a little white baby tee with the shop logo on the back, sneakers - I think we have a very indefinable uniform. Actually, I was at the grocery store maybe like two weeks go and someone yelled out to me asking if I had any ice cream on me to give away."

Weather you are a local resident of the Moosic area or a traveler on the hunt for a quick treat destination, Jitty Joe's welcome anyone from anywhere. Placed right on the side of the highway, it's hard to miss their big white board (figure 3) promoting their frozen, sweet treats.

The wide variety of flavors and assortment of items on the menu will always leave customers craving more after their first initial bite.
